It’s ambitious and has beautiful sequences, especially the opening sequence with the Statue of Liberty. Brody is strong as usual. The score is also strong. The film has an epic sweep but I will say, a few unnecessary scenes here and there. I didn’t think all the sex scenes were necessary, or at least I thought they were too drawn out, and the various interludes felt excessive. I didn’t really like Pearce’s performance. Although he plays an unlikable character, there’s a certain artificiality to his presentation and mannerisms that I didn’t like here. The film’s plot ends on a rather flat and strange note. . It’s a “strange” ending, imo, but that’s typical for a24 film. I cared about Brody’s character, but where did he really go in the end? Ask yourself that. He’s a bit lost while all the other side narratives and architectural explorations are going on, and then it just ends. Thematically, the film reflects the tension between art and capitalism nicely.
