What’s the general opinion?
Main Title (uncredited) Written and Performed by Ramin Djawadi. Let’s say you’re reading these reviews and you haven’t seen GoT yet, but you’re considering binge-watching the marathon now that it’s over. In this case, the consensus is correct, which is: Seasons 1-6: excellent. Deep world-building, intelligent dialogue, epic scenes worthy of Hollywood, professional acting, detailed plot, genuine surprises, great soundtrack used sparingly. GoT is definitely worth watching for this seasons.
There are inexplicable ideas, inconsistent characterization, and soap opera dramas
Season 7: Suddenly you notice that the quality of the script and plot has dropped off a lot. But at least the entertainment value is still very high, so you can let it slide. Season 8: This Descent plunges to depths you didn’t think possible. The script has become so amateurish that the still-fantastic production values are no longer enough to save it. If you ever enjoyed Lost but were surprised at how bad last season was, you’re on familiar ground here.
Fatal for fiction
The biggest problem with last season was that it took us out of the story and made us think about its many weaknesses. We lost our willingness to believe it. It also ruined the show’s story arcs to the point where rewatching the entire series is pointless. So can I recommend a GoT marathon for newbies? Yes, the first 6 seasons are worth the disappointments later.
But it’s not the best show of all time
It could have been, but because it failed in the home stretch, it falls behind the following better shows that are more worth your marathon: Battlestar Galactica (2003-2008) Twin Peaks (all 3 seasons plus the movie) Breaking Bad
