Story

Elwood Curtis’s college dream is shattered along a two-lane Florida highway. An innocent misstep sends him into the underworld of Nickel Academy, a brutal correctional facility in the heart of the Jim Crow South. He meets another student, Turner, who has seen it all. The two black teenagers form an alliance: Turner dispenses basic survival advice, Elwood clings to his optimistic worldview. In the context of the growing civil rights movement, Elwood and Turner’s existence seems a far cry from the polished oratory of the Reverend Martin Luther King. Despite Nickel’s brutality, Elwood struggles to hold on to his humanity, awakening a new vision for Turner.
