January 6, 2025In a near future where parenthood is strictly controlled, a couple’s seven-day trial for the right to have children turns into a psychological nightmare. There are 2 Rice University Easter eggs. The Appreciation is a sci-fi drama starring Elizabeth Olsen and Himesh Patel as Mia and Aaryan. A couple who want to have a child in the future take a 7-day trial with an evaluator (Alicia Viklander) who will authorize the trial if they don’t. Mishaps ensue, the baby will be a gift, but the parents-to-be find it more difficult than they expected. Given the strong acting and the unique premise, The Appreciation is something I really didn’t expect in terms of plot, but I think it’s brilliantly done. The movie is a 1-7 format. It takes place in a day-by-day format, and each day is as different and engaging as the last. Honestly, I was expecting it to rehash sci-fi cliches from the past, but I have to say, this is so original and unexpected that I think it turned out really well! The way everything connects and what the couple has to do is so well portrayed that it might be the most plausible reason to have children in a world driven by climate change. The performances don’t disappoint, Elizabeth Olsen and Himesh Patel were so good that they probably could have been standalone productions with a completely different plot and still been just as captivating. But Alicia Viklander is also very good and to be honest, she’s very good at the whole sci-fi genre and it was a pleasure to see her here. Everyone involved did their best and I really appreciate that in a film that doesn’t rely so heavily on CGI to be so creative. However, the film is jarring at points in terms of the sex and disturbing interactions with Alica. Viklander’s character, who acts like a child in an older woman’s body, gave me a Poor People vibe. That doesn’t really matter though and is essential to the plot, but it’s definitely for an older audience and I can imagine it being rated R or 15/18 in the UK if anyone cares. Overall, while some characters don’t have very developed storylines, the cast is so well-crafted and well-acted that it’s hard to find anything wrong with The Assessment. You should definitely go see it when it’s released in mid-2025. I highly recommend this wonderful, creative work of art when it hits theaters. Rating: A+ London Film Festival October 19.
